Transfer Station Attendant – Part-time
Pay: $18.00 – $20.00 per hour
Job Overview
Work for the Town of Dalton as a Transfer Station Attendant and be a vital part of our waste management and recycling operations! In this energetic role, you’ll be responsible for efficiently managing the transfer station, ensuring smooth handling of waste materials, and maintaining a clean, safe environment for our residents. Your proactive approach will help us deliver exceptional service while supporting environmental sustainability. This paid position offers the opportunity to work with heavy equipment and contribute to community sanitation efforts.
Duties
- Plans, accomplishes, organizes, directs and coordinates the activities of the Department. Is responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the Transfer Station.
- Responsible for cleanliness, maintenance, repair and organization of the facility and surrounding grounds.
- Turns all revenue and transaction summaries in to the town administration on a weekly basis, at a minimum. Turns in time sheets as required to meet payroll deadlines.
- Recommends plans and policies to be observed in the conduct of operations.
- Oversees private contractors hired to assist in completion of Department projects.
- Trains employees (including highway department staff and others providing back-up coverage) in proper equipment operation and maintenance activities.
- Operates and maintains front-end loader, compacting and snow removal equipment as needed. Coordinates with Highway Department for use of their equipment.
- Works with State and Federal agencies to assure Town’s compliance.
- Maintains knowledge, and ensures that employees maintain knowledge, of current regulations and any changes in regulations.
- Stays current of trends in solid waste and recycling through literature, workshops, contacting other towns, recycling companies, solid waste disposal facilities, trucking companies, etc.
- Educates the public on proper disposal and recycling through direction at the Transfer Station, public meeting, newspaper ads, handouts, website information, etc.
- Markets recyclables in the best interest of the town, and ensures that recyclables meet quality marketing standards.
- Oversees and accomplishes the separation of all materials; assess and collect required fees per established schedules.
- Maintains written record of all fees collected and provides fees and documentation to the Town Administrator as required by town financial policies and procedures.
- Monitors and schedules the pick-up of compacted waste and of recycled materials.
- Attends meetings as necessary to fulfill the requirements and obligations of the position. Reports to the Select Board at their regular meetings on at least a quarterly basis.
- Works with the Fire Rescue Department regarding the maintaining and burning of any materials.
- Works with the Highway Department regarding use of their equipment and use of their staff for back-up coverage.
- Provides Town Administrator with data and information needed to apply for available grants and to fulfill the reporting requirements of grant awards.
- Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred:
- Knowledge: Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in the management of solid waste and recyclables, and the operation of transfer stations; local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations applicable to the operation of the transfer station; hazards and safety precautions common to transfer station machinery and equipment.
- Ability: To establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town officials, employees, elected officials, officials of other governmental jurisdictions, consultants, contractors and the public; to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare reports and maintain records.
- Skill: Organizational skills in the operation and maintenance of transfer stations equipment, tools and facility; in providing exceptional customer service.
The Attendant performs responsible duties requiring the exercise of judgement and initiative in accomplishing and overseeing the operations.
Job Environment:
- The majority of work is performed outdoors with exposure to extremes of heat and cold temperatures and inclement weather. Incumbent is subject to the hazards associated with working at a Transfer Station and around heavy equipment. Work environment is very loud. Has exposure to hazardous materials/fumes from recycling automotive batteries. Weekend duty is required.
- Regularly operates various types of equipment including: hand and power tools; and related equipment; front-loader and other heavy equipment; as well as a telephone and other standard office equipment.
- Interact with the public, Town Administrator, various transfer stations, solid waste district, Casella/NCES, AVRRDD, trucking companies, NH Department of Environmental Services, recycling companies, and other entities/individuals as may be required.
- Errors in judgment may result in time loss and delay, cause damage to buildings and/or equipment, result in serious personal injury and injury to others, and have legal repercussions.

Road Crew Laborer – Seasonal Part-time
Pay: $18.00 – $20.00 per hour
Job description:
Performs the skilled operation of heavy equipment used in highway maintenance and construction activities, part-time seasonally. Also performs various semi-skilled tasks essential to public works operations including but not limited to utilizing and maintaining chain saws, heavy equipment and other tools to perform required maintenance and repair of highways, roads, and town properties.
