DESCRIPTION:The BioBlitz the DCC will be holding on Saturday\, September 21\, from 9am-12 noon at the Forest Lake State Park Forest. \nWe have a project page set up on the iNaturalist website\, linked below\, which you will need to “join” as a participant\, and the app will upload and collect the data you record in the park during the hike.  This will be of benefit to the DCC as we continue to identify species within Dalton. \nYou’ll need to have downloaded the app beforehand\, and I suggest practicing at home before the BioBlitz.  I was thinking we could practice at our next meeting\, but since we have a speaker\, I do not think that is practical. \nIt’s an easy hike along the snowmobile trail\, and it’s always fun to visit with friends during the hike\, feel free to invite whomever you’d like.  Folks can obviously turn around and end their hike when and if needed. \nWe will meet up in the parking lot of the state park as the gates will be open to the park until the end of the month\, so there’s plenty of parking. \nDress appropriately and bring water. DESCRIPTION:At 6:00 PM on Tuesday\, January 16\, 2024\, the Dalton Conservation Commission will host a UNH Speaker Bureau Presentation\, “Growing A Pollinator Garden”\, presented by Master Gardener Bill Weeks.  Insects such as bees and butterflies are helpful\, and in some cases\, essential\, in pollinating many of our food crops\, such as apples\, berries\, and vegetables.  In recent years\, there has been a significant decline in the populations of these wild pollinators.  Planting patches of flowers\, wildflowers\, grasses\, shrubs\, and flowering trees\, with an emphasis on the use of native plants\, can encourage and support natural pollinators\, as well as enhance backyard landscapes.  Recommendations will be presented on creating a pollinator habitat in your yard. \nThe public is encouraged to attend this free event at the Town of Dalton Municipal Building\, 756 Dalton Road\, in Dalton\, NH.

SUMMARY:Dalton Fall BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 21\, from 9am-12 Noon\, the Dalton Conservation Commission will be holding its 2nd “BioBlitz”.  A BioBlitz is a biological survey that aims to record all the living species within a designated area. This BioBlitz will be focused on surveying species within the Forest Lake State Park forest and the back section of the David Dana Forest.  The 1st BioBlitz was held on May 20\, with approximately 80 species being observed and recorded\, primarily within the David Dana Forest\, along with several additional observations by participants elsewhere within the Town of Dalton.  The data collected from the BioBlitz\, using the “iNaturalist” phone app to identify and catalogue the various species observed\, has been incorporated into the update of the Town of Dalton NRI.   Some of the more unique observations recorded included the Blue Cohosh and Yellow Lady Slippers. \nFor more information and to register\, please visit our iNaturalist project page at:  https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/dalton-nh-fall-2023-bioblitz-oct-21
